Jim,
we are working with our own part numbers. They are totally numeric, no
letters.
The structure is XXX-XXXXXX-XXX and holds every little piece of material
used in the company, including components, assemblies, PCBs, wires,
drawings. Couldn't have them include the stencils too, but I'm working on
it.
The first three Xs give the class of the part, different for resistors,
caps, assemblies, etc.
The next six make the difference between components of the same class (SMT
resistors, TH resistors, etc).
The last group is the ID of the particular component, 1K, 2K, etc.
The system based on the manufacturer part number is cumbersome and holds
lots of useless data for the people that use them most, like operators and
kitters. For the people that need the info from the manufacturer, like
package, footprint, etc., the data sheet is still there.
