Hi Rod,
we use an indirect method, a few drops of solution XX on the material. If it changes colour, there is no Cr, if no change there is Cr. Used it for checking chromate on inside/outside of microwave waveguides. Takes seconds. I don't have the recipe available instantly, but if you are interested I can get it. Simple chemistry I suppose.
