Hey Steve, (and Simon)
I think you are on a free one ; this is a classic example of insiders and
outsiders in know :
wherever I have been whenever new broom operations mgr came with this sorts
of green switching off lines (smt ; mouldings; design stations, etc.) he
usually very fast realized his own job was on line due to his ignorant
meddling and left it back with engineering .
We found in particular the p&p's and ate's are better left alone humming ;
the downtimes due complicated diagnostics being easy 10x+ the "savings" .
This was the crux ; as when failure occurs you know more or less straight
where, what  & why .
On power down and cool off you shift the whole picture ; seldom seeing any
warning signs due to fail different mechanisms ;
also you therefore miss any "reports" .

'm risking some aspirins here again (sorry Norman); but I found simple life
analogy last week :
usually (90%+) you have a slow puncture = while driving you get warning
signs, seeing you get warning signs = plenty time for easy controlled action
.
Not driving , not seeing you come to a dead flat when you need it least in
the morning and the panic (expensive) starts .
If any Benz guys are online (sorry to be orthodox) how about a front and
rear distance proxies on parking gear revert 90 degrees looking down the
ground and switching on alarm if dropping an inch for more then a minute ?
it's free ; seen first on IPC NET (I want my free lunch too)

Your person in question did calculated only one side of it ;
about a decade ago I did both ; because of one "keen" new broom .
Needless to say it didn't make me popular .

See you mate

Subject: [TN] "Green" Technologies...

Hi ya'll!

This may be a little off-topic, but I've got a little wager with someone
that
the thought behind "Green" Technology is really a bust. You know for
example,
the monitors that shut themselves off after a certain period of time may
well
save a few fractions of a cent in power consumption, but the stress of
powering down and up, and down and up, and so on, causes the life of the
monitor to be considerably shortened.

Somehow, this person has calculated that if everybody in the company shuts
their computers off everynight, and then reboots them every morning, there
will be a $3,500 a year savings in electricity. My take on it is that the
$3,500 in electricity savings will be overshadowed by the cost of failed
motherboards and associated hardware from the 'pooters powering up and
down...am I out to lunch on this? (If I am, I owe a lunch...hehehe)
