I agree! I have 3 e-mail accounts. One at work, a personal one on AOL, and
another personal one on Hotmail. I give out the Hotmail address most often,
since it is the most likely to be a long-term, consistent address. If I
decide to change jobs, THAT email address will change. If I decide to
change ISPs, THAT address will change. Through all the job and ISP changes,
my hotmail address will remain unchanged. No need to notify everyone, eh?
In fact, this reminds me to start posting that Hotmail address as a footer
to my TechNet responses/postings as well. Hotmail is not the only free
WEB-based e-mail service. Many sites have them (Yahoo, Freei.net,
NetZero.com, etc.). The last 2 provide free ISP accounts, too! After
retirement, I may make more use of them. There IS a risk that Hotmail will
discontinue e-mail service, but until then, I can avoid address changes.

Using a free web-based account for lists such as this isn't all that
unusual,
and there can be some pretty good reasons for doing it. For one thing, it's
an
easy way to keep the large volume of mails separated from your normal e-mail
account. This is especially useful if one is sharing an mail account, and
especially appreciated by the person(s) that are sharing the account that
don't
care to have to wade through all those mails! This isn't totally unusual,
either. Prior to taking my current job, I interviewed at a small electronics
assembly plant that only had ONE company e-mail shared by the whole plant,
with
probably 5 or 6 people actually using it. They had one shared computer that
was
used for all of their net access. Talk about a low-dough operation! At the
front
door was a card-holder for the plant manager's business card, and I noticed
that
he had a Hotmail e-mail address! I have to admit that when I saw that I
wasn't
exactly impressed.

But I digress. There are so many free e-mail services available, Excite,
Deja-news. etc., that trying to ban them could be quite a task in itself
just to
track them all down. Hotmail is probably the best known and so is usually
the
one used for abusive purposes. But I think it would be a mistake to just ban
hotmail accounts from this list anyway. It would be a shame to punish all
the
people that use them for good reasons based on the behavior of a relatively
few
that do abuse them.

Subject: [TN] "Hotmail" email accounts and the list...

Hi ya'll!

Over the past few days, the list has received a few messages from so-called
TechNet list members with "Hotmail" email addresses...most have been rather
rude and abusive. While I'm not one to suggest restricting anybody's first
amendment rights, I will say that the "Hotmail" email accounts are a means
of
disguising one's true identity...they're free, and anyone can get one.

As some of you may have noticed, the senders of these messages have been
very
negative and personal, basically not contributing anything but
criticisms...that's why (I think) it's only the "Hotmail" accounts.

What I am suggesting, is that anyone that has internet access these days,
will have an email account provided to them through their Internet provider.
But those that don't want their identity known, will then go and get a
"Hotmail" account so they can post whatever they want, to whatever list they
want and not risk being found out who they really are. In my mind, they're
hiding behind a digital screen, only because they don't want to truely face
the sort of feedback that will result from their posts...they're just trying
to be disruptive because they know they can.

What I'm suggesting, is that "Hotmail" addresses and other anonymous types
of
email addresses be banned from the list...I know that's pretty radical, but
it seems some children have found out that they can get these accounts and
post whatever they want to the list, and don't have the sort of integrity
that most of us exhibit. Maybe I'm just venting now...I know what I'm
suggesting isn't possible...

Anyways, I'm going to ignore any messages that I see has a "Hotmail"
address...there won't be any information that will be of any benefit to me
anyway (from what I've read so far)...that's probably the best thing for me
to do...I won't get as spooled up as I am now either.

We all learn eventually, who the true "Technetters' are...just need to
separate the wheat from the chaff...
