My 4 (or 5) Cents:
1. I don't know anyone (out of a considerable group of computer owners
/ users) that really utilizes the "green" functions, but DO know a
large group of the same people that have shut off the same functions
as a "nuisance"
2. Yes, there is more stress caused by starting up and shutting down.
3. Yes, if there are enough people in the company, and the majority
shut down their computers, of course there will be some savings. The
same applies to any electronic devices and the lights in the ceiling.
4. Well now... lets look at this $3500 - this is roughly the cost of
the "hardware" portion of two of the average corporate PCs (assuming
ave. cost of $1700) Also, we would be short sighted if we didn't
factor in lost time due to computers being down, lost work on bad hard
drives that has to be redone (nobody ever backs up this stuff do
they?), and the cost of having and I.S. group to support these
things....
... hmmm, making up the $3500 in computer costs is easy, but it's
harder to ascribe the death of computer parts to the turn on /
shutdown routine. I would suspect that more computers die from line
surges, drops and spikes than from the wear and tear of the on/off
cycle.
So, the big opinion: I agree with you Steve, but for the sake of this
bet, you'd better go Dutch Treat 'cause it's a hard one to prove.
Rob Green
PS: Have your bettor figure in the cost of the additional current flow
required to charge up those monitors and PC's after shutting them down
when you restart them vs. the cost of having them in a quiescent mode.

Hi ya'll!
This may be a little off-topic, but I've got a little wager with someone that
the thought behind "Green" Technology is really a bust. You know for example,
the monitors that shut themselves off after a certain period of time may well
save a few fractions of a cent in power consumption, but the stress of
powering down and up, and down and up, and so on, causes the life of the
monitor to be considerably shortened.
Somehow, this person has calculated that if everybody in the company shuts
their computers off everynight, and then reboots them every morning, there
will be a $3,500 a year savings in electricity. My take on it is that the
$3,500 in electricity savings will be overshadowed by the cost of failed
motherboards and associated hardware from the 'pooters powering up and
down...am I out to lunch on this? (If I am, I owe a lunch...hehehe)
