An Editorial About This Contraband (Personal Opinion by Definition):

Has anyone thought to ask the question why the environmentalists are not
supporting measures/incentives to improve conversion of lead in any form to
useful products especially in the electronics industry where contact is
minimal to the public? The point being -- A radical lead-ectomy will
cause problems for sure and cannot replace the real thing. Many are
staggered at the technological explosion of PCBs/ICs, but who is bragging
about new developments in environmental science or chemistry to handle
spent resources (considered cast to hell or purgatory)?

Lead is a strategic resource -- I know a fellow who leaded a number of
stained glass windows in house restorations. There were no questions where
it was going when purchased, how it could be transported, or what quantity
could be bought. You know -- There was enough lead in one house to fill a
solder pot that could coat 1,000s of PCBs.

Let's take a heavy look at the MSS that are precursors to plastics and
decide which pose a problem too? Since there will only be spit wads, there
will be no need for Kevlar.

Work on the lead-free issue has been on-going for several years now. CASTIN
was developed at least 7 years ago in preparation for the inevitable
change,
and organizations like ITRI and companies like Teledyne/Halco have pb-free
papers that were published in the early 1990s. Then the issue seemed to die
down in the U.S. (coincidentally?) when the Republicans took over congress
(sorry Newt). It's picked up again now, hasn't it.

It seems that the big push (panic?) pertaining to this issue only occurred
when dates were actually set for the abolishment of lead in electronics
mfg.
I have a feeling that we could have had 30 years to prepare for this, but
there would not have been a wide-scale switch or any "definitive" research
results until an official mandate was made. Then, of course, the panic
would
ensue. If we could adjust to the cfc ban, I am sure that we'll all survive
this, as well.

Thanks,

Werner
Don't hold back. Tell us how you feel!
In many cases these types of initiatives create their own momentum and
therefor the impact is real, right or wrong, at the application level.

Hi Bob,
Wow! To compare the government and its agencies to a "Professor" is more
than
bid strong. Insane asylum inmates having stolen the keys may be more apt.
Those are the very people that have cost this country 50 billion dollars
(and
counting) with their asbestos scare.
Do you really believe everything coming down from D.C.?
How about our V.P. claiming to have invented the Internet?
How about sandblasting lead-containing paint from highway bridges (some
kids
might chew it off), only to contaminate peoples backyards with now airborne
lead.
And for your information, work has been going on for lead-free solders for
some time-with all the effort no drop-in replacement has been found to my
knowledge. And things are not as simple as getting a new reflow machine.
