Hi David,
All you need to do is go into the literature of the last 40 years and look at
the number of papers. There has been some excellent work done in some of the
labs of the major OEMs, Bell Labs, IBM, Motorola, Ericsson, HP, etc. Problem
is with all the down-sizing and other bean-counter changes, these
laboratories are shadows of their former selves (is they still exist at all).
Therefore, the resources that were brought to bear onto the Sn-PB solder
reliability issue, simply do not exist any more to be applied to the
lead-free solders.
Thus, the concerns are real.
