If the BGA operation was "flakey" prior to the freeze spray then you may have just accelerated an intermittent failure into a hard failure.  Hitting a hot (I assume plastic) BGA with freeze spray will give it a bit of a thermal shock - thermal shock's can accelerate and also create mechanical failure mechanisms.  So it's certainly possible that Bev's mechanical contact scenario could have been at play here.  I've seen poorly reflowed BGA's which could be made to function by pressing on them with a finger, something you may want to try here.

When using any spot cooling or heating tools/fluids one must consider ESD, electrical properties if a fluid is used, thermal shock damage, min/max temperature of the component/board.  My recommendation is to go slow.
