 Occasionally I have gotten these e-mails too.  I think it has to do with the return reciept information that some people tag their e-mails with.  If you read the message, it sends off a "read" message, if you toss it before reading, it sends off a "not read" message. (I think)  I usually toss anything that does not have a good subject anyway.

This morning I received  a message from technet;

Your message  dated Fri, 9  Jul 1999  08:34:47 -0400 with  subject "Read:
Thermode soldering" has been successfully distributed to the TechNet list

I DID NOT SEND THIS MESSAGE I HAVE SCANNED MY COMPUTER AND FOUND NO VIRUSES
DO NOT KNOW WHERE THIS HAS COME FROM.  I HAVE A RETURNED MESSAGE FROM  "Mail
Delivery Subsystem [[log in to unmask]]"  STATING THERE IS AN ATTACHMENT
DO NOT OPEN.
