Hi Steve. Been busy so I guess I missed out on where you ended up at!

If you're at a contract manufacturer (damn, the competition again!),
Paul's comment about a flying prober being a good investment is
correct; they're becoming the hot item for prototype and low-volume
testing (I'm buying one right now myself).

However: If you are talking those kinds of volumes, you will want to
go with a fixture based In-Circuit or MDA tester. The fixture based
systems (Teradyne, GenRad, HP, etc.) are very common, and you can buy
good ones used. Probably a Teradyne Z1820 or similar system would do
ya. The problem with the flying probers is that they are _slow_
compared to the fixture based systems.

...And yes, you can leave them in panels. Have the test fixtures
designed to handle both a single unit and a panel on the same fixture
     (another common practice)

The last question is: Where's your Test Engineer during this
process? If he doesn't exist, you'll be happy to know that for at
least the 3 manufacturers that I've listed above, you can always find
outside houses that will do turnkey development of your programs and
     fixtures.

Sounds like a job for flying probes to me ;
and considering the change state of contract environment it could be a good
investment as well Steve .

If you put your trusty dog through SMI or Nepcon proceedings ; there are
loads to pick from .

See yo' paul

Subject: [TN] Flex-circuit electrical testing...

Hi again!

Boy, I'm just full of questions today huh?!We got a job we're bidding on
for some Flex-circuits...at pretty good volumes. The volume will dictate
the need for additional capital equipment. So I've been asked to come-up
with a S.W.A.G. on how much money it will take to support this project.

The printers, pick and place, reflow, and stuff like that I can deal with,
but according to the drawings on the assemblies that I have (there's
14-different part numbers) they want them electrically tested. Nothing
complicated, stuff like opens, shorts, overvoltage, undervoltage, diode
polarity, as well as being tested for values on certain components like
thermistors, resistors, and whatnot.

I've built some flex before, but I have not a clue how and with what kind of
equipment they are tested with. These circuits are going to be in 12" X 18"
panels. Do they have to be singulated to be tested? Can someone just give me
a real rough idea of what kind of equipment and the cost to do those kind of
tests? Sorry 'bout being so dumb about stuff like this...

We're talking yearly volumes of over 1,000,000 unit in many of the part
numbers by the way...fun stuff huh?

As always, forever in ya'lls debt...
