Thank you for contacting me.

Please let me assure you that bill 602P does not exist. Despite the
e-mail
message claiming that the Post Office will charge five cents for every
e-mail
sent, there is currently no legislation pending to tax email.

You can find out more information about this at the Post Office's
website.
Just click on the link "E-mail rumor completely untrue" at
http://www.usps.com.

Dear Mr. Stark:
Below is an e-mail currently circulating on the Internet. In essence it
suggests that Congress is working on a bill (Bill602P) which would allow
the US Postal Service to assess a $0.05 surcharge on every Internet
e-mail. I thought it prudent to find out if this is true or not, and if
it is, ask you, my representative, to vote against such an issue.

This smacks of colonialism of sorts, where the phone company is run by
the postal service (as it is in much of the British world, as well as
certain parts of Europe and Asia); it further grates one nerves in that
we would be paying tribute to the postal service when they do not
provide the service of Internet. Given the mess they've made of the US
mail system, I suspect that they would be ill-equipped to deal with the
technology of running the Internet.

In closing, I would like to thank you for your continued service and
look forward to your response.

Respectfully,
                Bill Davis, Ph.D.
