Trying to re-call the justification I wrote 3 years ago.

If you don't get the updates or buzz of what's changing, you won't know. SO
you'll be able to keep abreast of what happening in the industry.
(PCB footprints, drawing formats, soldering, etc.)

If your calling out IPC standards on your drawings, you what to ensure yours are
current. (OBSLT specs or looser/tighter tolerances)

It a source of information for most of the PCB industry. Why shun what's been
accepted as reliable and generate your own specification. This would take time
to generate, maintain and pass along to vendors.
