Steve
If I were faced with this the only questions I would have are:
 - is it going to be inspectable? Is there sufficient gap for inspection
and to insure no CTE type interactions in the solder joints?
 - if it is an SMT application, will it result in one joint being robbed of
solder (one joint has lots of solder, one joint doesn't have enough).

Dealt with a design once where several adjacent legs of a SOIC were
electrically common, the designer just put in one big pad instead of
electrically joined smaller ones. The net result was a lead in the middle
with lots of solder and the outside leads were "so so"...

Steve,

we do this thing on most of our products.

Because of frequent ECOs, we have to alter a lot of assemblies and it is
pretty often that we connect two components on the same pad. And this is not
a production level solution, since the modifications are done according to
schematics issued by the Engineering.
