Hi Shaun!

I went to the ol' dawg pile and tried to find a company called
Accuspec...seems I remember a kit that they sold with a glass plate and what
they called glass "slugs" that were coated with a metal in a footprint that
mimicked a QFP, and that matched the same pattern on the glass plate. I
remember that when I worked at Zevatech the feild service department had one
that they used to calibrate and test the vision systems. But ol' puppa-dawg
didn't come-up with any hits...no milk bones fer' him tonight!

But he did find somethin' else, a company called:

Max Levy Autograph, Inc.

If you go to: http://www.maxlevy.com/Reticles.htm

That'll take you to a page that talks about the things they can make, below
is a paste from the page of what they do:

VISION, GRATINGS, RONCHI RULINGS AND MORE

SUBSTRATES for UV-VIS-IR & X-RAY:   Optical Glass (Float Glass, Crown Glass,
B270, BK-7, Filter Glass and others); UV materials (Synthetic Quartz / Fused
Silica);  IR materials (Zinc Sulfide, Zinc Selenide, Germanium); Machined
Ceramic Materials; and new or developmental materials (BBO, KNSBN, KN, KTA,
KTP, LBO, Lithium Niobate, NYAB, Nd:YvO4). Patterns also done on Metal and
Plastic or Acrylic substrates.

COATINGS: Patterns on glass can be delineated within numerous Coating
Materials and add Anti-Reflection and Diffusion effects. We are leaders in
special processing for unique and difficult applications.

FEATURES to 0.000 040" [0.001mm] can be replicated.

APPLICATIONS include Machine Vision, Optical Sights, Test Patterns,
Alignment, Resolution, Microscopy and more.

You gotta know, this stuff not be cheap! VERY precise etching and whatnot,
and done on glass substrates that are very stable with temperature changes.
The Accuspec kit that Zevatech had was at least a couple of thousand dollars
if I remember correctly...

I don't think you wanna use a spray adhesive on these things, for one, you
stand the risk of damaging them, and two, you want to keep anything away from
any registration marks or fiducials so to let the machine see things as
clearly as possible, also you want to be able to see the placement clearly
yourself to know whethert or not the machine is placing accurately.

To secure the parts after placement, just use some small strips of double
sided tape and place them in diagonal corners of the part footprint. That'll
hold them well enough for you to check the placement. Plus, it'll be less of
a hassle peeling little strips of tape up instead of using some sort of
solvent to clean the adhesive up.

Hope this helps!
