Well...apology not needed pardner'...but I have to admit that it did take me
by suprise...and I want to apologize for continuing this thread to those that
may think the TechNet is not the place to be discussing something like this.
I know the discussions should stay technical. But I think this is a pretty
relevent topic. It's been in much of the news this past week that companies
in the Silicon Valley are projecting to lose 3-billion dollars over the next
few years because they're aren't enough high-tech workers in the valley.
Quality of life here has a lot to do with it, in the news Friday last week we
were greeted on the front page of the San Jose Mercury News with;
"$400,000...and Rising. Median price of a Santa Clara County home hits
$410,000". But it's also because companies are so competitive here in the
valley that sometimes all that's focused on is the bottomline instead of the
people that's on the production floor doing the work. I still don't know how
the hourly production workers survive here...

Like Paul said in his message, my situation is not all that unique. I think
there is a bunch of us that have been, and still are, in the same sort of
position that I am in now. To those of you that are in a management position,
little things like "Thanks", or "Hell of a nice job" go a long, long way, and
doesn't cost one single penny.

I just wanna say I'm really not a whiner. This isn't the first start-up that
I've worked before. I knew how tough it was going to be when I accepted this
position, but I didn't think the tough times would go on this long, and I
didn't think I would be as under-appreciated as I feel. I know that you need
to be, shall I say; "frugally creative" until you can start getting some
revenue and cash flow going. If the money ain't there, it ain't there...can't
get blood from a turnip as they say. After working at a start-up before, some
of you must be saying; "Steve, what's a matter with you boy? You like pain
and suffering?" Not especially, but I do like a challenge...and I think I'm
no different than 99% of the rest of you who would get a great deal of
satisfaction seeing something blossom from nothing, and knowing that you were
there from the beginning. That's why I accepted the position in the first
place.

But now I feel I need to get back closer to my roots North Carolina...or at
least on the east side of the Mississippi somewhere. Will I ever work at a
start-up again? Hope I don't, but I can't say that I wouldn't ever...would
have to get to know my bosses a lot better before I accepted a position like
this again.

I just wanna say to everybody that has someone reporting to them at your
jobs, don't forget who does the work of the company, because they ARE the
company, and if you forget that, you won't survive...and surviving in today's
business world is getting tougher and tougher.
