Confused about Surface Finishes???

The Greater Boston Chapter of the IPC Designer's Council will
hold its next meeting on Wednesday, May 19th.

        Topic and Speaker:

Leighton MacMillan, CTO with Coretec, will present an overview
of currently used surface finishes and newer ones being inves-
tigated. Advantages and disadvantages of each will be discussed
and reviewed in terms of costs, shelf life, co-planarity, accep-
        tance and more.

Coretec is Canada's largest privately held printed circuit fab-
ricator; with two plants in Toronto they hold ISO 9002 and MIL
        PRF 55110 certifications.

        Agenda:

Please note there is a $10 meeting fee. Pizza/soft drinks
        will be available.

        6:00 Arrivals and Pizza
        6:45 Chapter Business
7:00 Leighton MacMillan - PWB Surface Finishes

        Location/Directions:

Lockheed/Martin in Lexington MA. This facility is located off
route 128 at the route 2A/Concord/Hanscom exit. Proceed West
200 yds, turn Left onto Forbes Road. The meeting is in the
first building on the left (after the guard shack).

        President's Note:

The group is most pleased to have attracted Mr MacMillan back
to our group, and look forward to hearing his perspectives and
research on this very current topic. He is an informative and
engaging speaker, as well as posessing a wealth of knowledge
from his 18 years in PWB technical management.

Surface finishes are among the more controversial pieces of
todays PWB "puzzle". With so many to chose from, and often
only material vendor's claims to rely on, we can look forward
to some overall perspective from Mr MacMillan's presentation.

        Upcoming:

On June 3rd we will have our last meeting of the season, with
Dr Eric Bogatin presenting "Stack up design for PCBs: Beyond
        the IPC recommendations".

On June 8th the SMTA will be presenting "uBGA Design, Fabri-
cation and Assembly Issues" given by Tessera. Meetings are
held at the Ramada Inn in Woburn at 5:30 pm and there is a
        $25 charge for members, $30 for non-members.

        Mission:

Design is not called "do" for a reason. To design in today's
PWB environment implies adding value while giving electronics
a physically manifestable form. In order to add value one
must have a full grasp of the issues and stake holders, often
helping to mediate compromises among those interest groups.
The Greater Boston Chapter of the IPC Designer's Council is
trying to bring those stake holders, from every discipline,
to show you their problems and solutions so you can add them
        to your arsenal of knowledge.

Your help and participation are most welcome.

        Thanks and regards,
