You are using the old version of IPC-782, which refers to a "k" factor. The
updated IPC-SM-782A (1993) reflects a much improved set of requirements for
calculating land patterns. It walks you through sample calculations and
clearly defines the component dimension requirements.

I would also like to point you to the IPC web site: www.ipc.org. Under design
you will find a land pattern calculator that will enable you to view the
patterns in the current standard as well as calculate new patterns from
component data. It contains a user searchable database of patterns for
components not yet approved by EIA or EIAJ.
