I think that there is a lot in Nick Buinno's paper that may need further data
and explanation; however, the nickel depletion and the increased gold deposit
on the same land, but not in the same place. is not unexpected.  The gold
atom does not necessarily have to be deposited in the exact place that the
nickel atom was removed.  An exchange of electrons is all that is needed.  As
with other corrosion reactions the removal of metal often leaves voids while
the new corrosion poducts formed may be some distance away.
the electron balance of the reaction. however, has to be maintained.

This is my thoought.  Nick B. may have another theory and maybe, if he is on
this forum he may voice it.
