Hi Chuck! The problem is that the "ole pink pearl eraser" repair method
does not work nearly as slick as electronics mythology would lead you to
believe! The composition of most erasers includes several things that act
as very good abrasives thus scrubbing off a fair amount of many kinds of
surface contamination. But - you also leave a great deal of embedded eraser
particles in/on the "treated" surface which can lead to latent field
failures depending on your use environment. You summed up the use of an
eraser as a repair method quite nicely - primitive! Many folks use either
plasma or ozone cleaning prior to wire bonding. Good Luck.

Subject: [TN] Wire Bonding On Gold

We are presently wire bonding aluminum wire to gold lands on circuit
boards.
I have heard many times that wire bonding goes sour to clean them with an
eraser. This seems a little primitive. Is there any other way that this
can
be accomplished.
If the eraser works why hasn't someone designed something to take care of
this.
