Nick- As others have said this is generally used as a solvent. It is
also a carcinogenic compound, if the vapors are inhaled for extended
periods of time. There is some NEJM info from its archives which suggest
it can also be toxic when prolonged contact occurs; equally, it can also
cause lesions on skin of 'sensitive' users...

In general, outside of an analytical laboratory, it usually does not
have a place in printed circuit manufacturing, as there are other less
toxic compounds available.
