GenCAM - the Data Transfer Solution

The Greater Boston Chapter of the IPC Designer's Council will
hold its next meeting on Wednesday, March 10th. This is a joint
meeting with NEDDMA, the New England Design and Data Management
Association, and the Boston Chapter of the SMTA is also invited.

        Topic and Speaker:

Harry Parkinson of Compaq (and chairman of the IPC's Data
Transfer
committee) will present the reasons for and benefits of this new
standard, including intended purposes and interested parties.

For decades design descriptions have been made in raw data for
direct use in numerically controlled machines. As electronics
become more complex, the intervention needed to produce board
level
products has made this style of data virtually unmanageable.
The
new ANSI approved GenCAM standard moves this hand-off to the
next
level, integrating fabrication, assembly and test information in
one complete description file. This standard will allow all CAD
systems to target a uniform output, giving the production equip-
ment community a single file type to work with.

There will be a demonstration of a review tool, and compliance
checking product. A free CD-ROM containing the released
standard
and supporting info will be given to attendees.

NEDDMA also as a process has sponsors for their meetings. There
will be a sponsor unrelated to the topic who will have a table
exhibit and will have a few minutes of "floor time" during
dinner.

        Agenda:

Please note this is a hotel dinner and accordingly cost is $24.

5:00 pm Arrivals, Networking and "Attitude Adjustment"
        5:45 Dinner
6:30 Organization Introductions and Chapter Business
7:00 Harry Parkinson, GenCAM - Data Transfer Solution

        Attendance and RSVP info:

Everyone welcome. RSVP required, mailto:[log in to unmask]

From the South - take Rt 95 (128) north to Exit 22, bear right
onto Grove St, continue to the Holiday Inn on left.

        President's Note:

Data handling and integrity are an important part of the value
a designer can add to the product development process. Under-
standing the data needs of the production world and carrying
that message to the engineering data sets can be tedious but is
often at the crux of production problems. While the new GenCAM
standard will certainly help the data hand-off problem, we will
still be faced with a need to know and manage the data content.
However facile you may be with the multitude of problems to
be solved in the design process, data is your end product. You
need to be involved in every aspect of that data, "Owning the
Issue" is a good way to advance your career.

        Mission:

Design is not called "do" for a reason. To design in today's
PWB environment implies adding value while giving electronics
a physically manifestable form. In order to add value one
must have a full grasp of the issues and stake holders, often
helping to mediate compromises among those interest groups.
The Greater Boston Chapter of the IPC Designer's Council is
trying to bring those stake holders, from every discipline,
to show you their problems and solutions so you can add them
        to your arsenal of knowledge.

Your help and participation are most welcome.

        Thanks and regards,
