Hello ...

We had similar issues raised on a recent Navy program relating to our use of Kapton tape as an insulating barrier in some high voltage equipement. Flex circuits were also questioned. The only issue I was aware of was the Navy ban on the use of Kapton insulated wire in harnesses (for new design) on an airborne applications. They banned a specific mil spec type of wire. The ban was related to a couple of fires on aircraft where the Kapton film insulation, after several years of vibration & abrasion, had split, allowing adjacent wires to contact each other. I spoke with Dupont's Kapton insulation/wire expert - he was unaware of any other bans on Kapton in Navy programs. He also gave me the names of some contacts with the Navy who verified this. If you contact me offline and furnish a fax number, I'll send you a copy of the report I wrote to clear up the audit action. By the way, we were able to continue our use of Kapton on the program.

Hi Phil -

I haven't heard anything recently on this subject, but there was a major issue
probably fifteen or twenty years ago. In my recollection it involved some
U.S.Navy aircraft (possibly A-6 or F-4). If I remember correctly the
polyimide insulation of stranded wire bundles had been attacked and
deteriorated by some of the aircraft cleaning fluids. I'm not aware of any
fires, but it certainly was a situation that would have had the potential to
produce such.

I'm not aware of any prohibition of polyimide other than for wire jackets in
areas which may be exposed to certain strong alkalines.

How's about it? Anyone else out there got anything new or more accurate
recollections?

Note that Kapton is the DuPont registered trade name for their series of
polyimide materials. There are many other sources of polyimide products in
todays market.

Regards - Kelly
