My sentiments exactly, If it costs a penny more the average consumer
will not buy it. A good example was the Gasahol debacle a few years ago,
It was perceived as both better for the environment and reduced
dependance on fossil fuels, and of course it carried a price premium and
had very limited success in the marketplace .

Personally I feel this lead thing is getting a bit out of hand.
Old PC boards should not be placed in the dump, Land fill etc. They
should be recycled , so that any metals utilized will be reclaimed.

Secondly Several years ago I did a large number of TCLP on
various waste materials from the P.C. shop. It turns out that with HASL
boards, would most of the time pass the TCLP . Unfortunately when you
add the components it becomes a different matter.

No one has made mention at all about the metals, and chemical
compounds contained within the components, not to mention the compounds
utilized to manufacture the components and Circuit boards.

Finally If the European Community has taken up the banner to ban
lead in PC boards, then they should ban it in all the other items that
might contain lead that are used, or manufactured in Europe. As I
recall there is still a lot of pewter made in Europe that is used for
various purposes, not to mention the various lead crystal made there. (
The Lalique decanter that contains Louis 13 cognac is considered unsafe
for the storage and transport of human consumables due to its lead
content and that fact it fails TCLP . SO if you through out your broken
Waterford or Lalique crystal there is a good chance you are illegally
dumping of hazardous waste. And as recently as February of this year you
could buy leaded gasoline in the UK ........

Once again in the course of human development a political
Bureaucrat has taken up a cause with little to no forethought. ( and you
thought only the man from La Mancha fought windmills)

What we as an industry should be collectively pushing for on a
world basis is the adoption of a truly world standard for Environmental
controls, Not 14000 which is just another cash cow for a select few,
but a true standard that compliance with which reflects best in the
world. WE should take the toughest Air, Water and Worker safety
regulations in the World combine them and set them as the goal.
This ability to be in some country and dump any process stream
into a field or water shed is antiquated and will be deadly in the long
run. Is the control of effluent undesirable.? Economies aside is this
fair to the world?
Have you ever seen a barrier that prevents one ocean from
physically mixing with another over the course of time?.

Places like Hong Kong with 6.5 million inhabitants , dump the entirety
of their human waste untreated into the Ocean. Just think of what
industrial process wastes are reaching the same water.!

Their are places in Taiwan that have to truck in water because the
demand far exceeds the supply, and they don't reprocess a drop in the
industrial setting.

Why not strive for PERFECTION NOT PROTECTION. IF the EU feels that
lead is so bad then Eliminate it from the EU in every form.

Depends on what the price tag says....
