<< Hello all,

I'm planning a process capability study to benchmark the performance of my
Zevatech 740 P&P and was wondering if either 1)anyone out there has done
this on a Zevatech manchine and has suggestions or if 2) anyone can suggest
what type of materials to use (i.e. glass substrates, special parts and/or
kits, etc.) This will be the first time I've done a process capability study
on a surface mount machine and was just looking for some advice.

 Thanks

Hi Tim!

It depends how deep you want to get. Zevatech has a pretty good board
that is used for demo's and the feild service guys use it to dial the machines
in. When I worked for them we called it the JUKI board, but I think they've
started calling it something else now. They've got the CAD centroids for it
which is important if you want to use it as a benchmarking board.

It's got every imaginable package footprint that you can think of on it,
from 0402's arranged in a circle (good to check theta with), as well as 12,
15.7, 20, and 25-mil QFP footprints along with many other types of packages.
It also has all 7 SMEMA fiducials. This is a good board to use for what I call
a "Gold Board" that you dial all your machines in with. That way you can take
a program and no matter what machine you decide to run on, the program runs
without "tweeking" it for each machine.

As far as benchmarking the machine, I was involved in a
demonstration/trial while working for Zevatech for Sony who were looking to
buy the machines for their Mexico operations building their DSS recievers. One
of their requirements was that there could not be more than 3 mis-picks out of
20,000 placements...we had 2. This was done on a 730, which most consider a
little less precise than the 740. The 740 is the vision machine, while the 730
uses only laser. Another thing that made this a little more challenging was
the fact that myself and another applications engineer (Chris Curtis) had set
this demo up using Toplines speedboard which utilized 1206's and 0805's. When
the gentlemen from Sony showed-up, we learned that they wanted to see the
machine perform using 0603's...we was thinkin' ruh-roh! But it worked like a
champ!

Call Zevatech and talk to Tom Luckenbach at (919) 460-0111, he's the apps
guy on that side of the Mississippi, he'll help ya' out. Tell him "Kramer"
said hi! (Don't ask how I got that nickname...hehehe)
