I would like to ask the opinions of the people on this list in order to
assess the need for a service I am considering offering.

As some of you may know from the questions you have been so kind as to
answer for me, I am a translator of technical documentation from Japanese
into English, focusing on the fields of PWBs, semiconductors, and
electronics. While the pay is good and while I enjoy the fact that such a
job builds on the experience I have had as a semiconductor engineer and an
electronics lab instructor (while still allowing me to capitalize on the
fact that I am bilingual Japanese), the isolation of this solitary job is
stifling, and I am ready for a change (or at least ready to divert some time
away from technical translation to other activities).

Both my master's work and doctoral dissertation were on quality control and
organizational effectiveness in the electronics industry in Japan (based on
extensive field work in a host of companies in Japan and the United States)
rather than on translation. Because of this, it occurred to me that I would
be in an ideal position to take advantage of my knowledge of quality control
and ISO 9000 (combined with my experience in technology assessment developed
during my dissertation work at Harvard) to declare myself a "Supplier
Quality Auditor," specializing in auditing the quality control systems of
Japanese suppliers for US firms as the US firms seek to obtain (or maintain)
their ISO 9000 registrations.

It seems to me that it would be difficult for firms such as those on this
list to perform quality verification audits on their suppliers in Japan
because of language and cultural barriers, and that there would be a
substantial market need for an expert in this field. This is appealing to me
because I could keep up my translation practice while auditing trips to
Japan would get me out of my home-based office once in a while...

My questions to you are as follows:

1. Do you see a need for such a specialized supplier quality auditing
function focusing on auditing Japanese suppliers of US firms in the PWB,
semiconductor, and electronics industries?
2. If so, to what functionary in firms such as yours would I peddle my
services? (QC? Purchasing? Engineering?)

Thank you for your time, and thank you for the help you have given me as I
have asked technical questions in the past.

Warren Smith
