Unbeknownst to you, what you have just estimated was a 4 Tire change at
Daytona. 1) 15 secs to jump over the wall and jack up the right side of the
car 2) 15 -20 seconds to change the right side tires and the last 15 - 30
seconds to jump over to the other side of the car to change the last two
tires. All this while gassing up! >>

Hi ya Bill!

Tell ya' what, if it takes a pit crew almost a minute to do a full 4-tire
change and 22-gallons of gas at a race, they'll get laughed at and razzed by
all the other pit crews...a decent time for a full pit stop is right around
20-22 seconds, 18 seconds if all seven of you are workin' together like a
well-oiled machine. Heck, I can't even pull the jack outta my trunk in
20-seconds.

Paul, you are right...there's no racing like the rallies you guys have
in Australia, or even in Europe for that matter. The lawyers here in the
U.S.A. would absolutely LOVE for us to race the way they do down under, or in
Europe. Those of you that don't follow how they race rallies, they close the
streets down and everybody lines the roads to spectate. We're talking 2-lane
roads that run right through the middle of towns and stuff. When you see film
or video of these races, you see these guys come blazing around the turns
sideways while at the same time you see about 50-people scattering in
different directions trying to keep from becoming a berm for the car to bank
off of in the turn...yes I would say your racing is a bit more exciting to
watch.

     So you're a Labonte brother fan...they're good drivers too. I guess I
just like the good ol' boys...Dale Ernhart, Rusty Wallace, Darrel Waltrip,
Mark Martin, them guys...started back when NASCAR wasn't the big deal it is
now...drove because they loved it, not because of the money in the sport,
there wasn't hardly any back then like there is now...and even now, what them
guys win barely pays what it costs to campaign a car, driver, and support crew
all year long. They don't support themselves from the purses at each race,
it's the money they get from all the advertisements they got plastered all
over their cars.

Anyways, my jumper wire quote...one each. You guys taught me a lot again.
From all the feedback I got, it was made perfectly clear that I was under-
estimating things a bit. Which may explain why I'm not kicking back on some
beach now, retired, sipping on one of them fancy smancy drinks with a
umberella sticking out the top, all the while being fanned by a tropical hula
girl with one of those palm leaf fans...('scuse me, I'm day-dreaming for a
minute.....ahhhhh!)

_________BACK TO REALITY___________(shucks, just when my daydream was getting
good too!)

I guess I'm not greedy enough for my own good...but I would have been
wrapping a twenty dollar bill around each one of those boards had I went with
even the higher $90.00 figure (more than $20.00 actually...).
After I absorbed everybody's feedback, and "massaged" things a bit, we're
offering to do the job for $112.50. I know it's probably still on the low side
a bit, but don't forget we're still a start-up and we do give some good
pricing in order to get customers to give us a chance so we can establish
ouselves...we're not out and out buying the business, but I think they deserve
a little break since they're taking somewhat of a risk not knowing any of us
or what kind of work we do. Once we establish a reputation (a good one
hopefully...) we can get things back up where they need to be to make a fair
profit.

I just wanted to thank Angie from Quadrus for the spreadsheet she emailed
to me...it works GREAT Angie! I ran the numbers through it and your
spreadsheet told me $118.70. My boss had already sent the $112.50 figure over
to the customer...and we got the job.

Rob from Hadco gave me some good advice that I had planned on doing
anyway, that is breaking the job up into "stations" where certain tasks are
done at each one. I'll make some good visual aids so that it'll be right in
front of them and they won't have to search the board to find the locations
they're working with. I don't know if any of you do this, but I'll share what
I do to make some good production doc's, from the PCB gerbers, the cheap
way...with shareware and freeware.

I use Lavenir Viewmate and Paintshop Pro...both you can download offa'
the NET for free. I'll pull up the PCB silkscreen in Lavenir, change the
colors so I have a white background and black lines, then hit the "Print
Screen" key on my keyboard. That copies your screen to your clipboard. Then
open up Paintshop Pro and do a "Paste-New Image" and you got your gerber
silkscreen into something that's easy to edit and add things like jumper wires
or any other rework instructions to...piece o'cake!

What I also did with my quote, is to split it up between the easy stuff
and the hard stuff. Our normal shop labor rate is $35.00 an hour, and we
figure that Trang's and Tran's time is worth $45.00 (they're my rework
guru's). So I tallied up the part adds and the pin lifts (the 50-mil pitch
ones) and they'll be done by the less skilled operators, and the other stuff
will be handled by T & T...that way they won't be tied-up as long with this
job as I originally thought.

When we get the job I'm gonna look at things real close and basically
benchmark tasks since we're gonna do a little bit of everything on this
board...it'll be a good one to validate the rework quoting with. I'll post
what I learn from that if ya'll want me to..
