Thanks Les, Joseph, and Pat,

My question, though I do know some basics about solder, solderability, and soldering, was meant to
deal with dispelling an old definition still used by some. It was an accepted definition some years
ago and was one Manko taught. However, my intent was to probe more deeply the definition of surface.

We know an object's area, without depth, is defined as its surface. We also know a surface is
measured as a finite number of Angstroms. Beyond this number, measurable depth is observable. I
simply want to know if diffusion goes beyond this number into a structure made up of so many atomic
layers (and about how many?), and whether this number is deeper than surface. This obviously is true
concerning intermetallic formations - as discussed by so many of you who are experts.

Again your help is appreciated,

Earl Moon
