I agree preheat is critical to all wave solder operations. Flux
selection and pretinning of component leads where possible will assist
     in using lower preheat temperatures.

I have visited a company in Chicago which makes custom Mini-wave
     machines.

Contact: New Age Electronic Devices Inc. at 773-973-3296 ask for John
Susco. Please tell him we spoke. Call me at 603-896-2151 if I can be
of further help. Leave a message and I will call back.

     Regards

Alon-

When I first started working at the company I am at now, we had what you
call a "bench top" wave solder machine. It was only about 4' long, used two
carriers to transport the boards, had 1' of pre-heat, and had about 200 lbs.
of solder in the pot. The problems we had, although we got good solder
joints using water soluable flux, was that the one foot of pre-heat was
nowhere close to enough pre-heat to get the board up to temperature. We had
the preheats at 100% and we would blast each cap on the board. I can
garauntee we were not following the recommended profile. If I were you I
would be weary of "bench top" wave solder units. If you find one that sits
atop a bench, be sure it has enough pre-heat to ramp the board at an
appropriate rate.
