Richard:

There is a water soluble Solder mask that will protect surfaces against
solder contamination and is washed off during wash cycle. If you are
washing your boards, then it is a very effective process. It was used
very successfully when I was at IBM.

Let me know of your application and process parameters and I can send
you small sample of the material for a trial.
