Yeah Al, I suppose you're right in the functional sense, but it really is
easier to do the lead trimmings, just ask any rework operator. Plus, it looks
cleaner in my opinion, and keeps things out of the way. I know if they start
finding problems when they're first debugging the board, they may want to get
to other devices and areas on the board to probe and measure things...plus,
wouldn't using wires put a delay in the signals? These SIMM's being the RAM
for the board I would think they need very short wires wouldn't they?...can't
get much shorter than the way we did things. Anyways, not even thinking about
signal delays for me to use wires would've meant that I would have to try to
find room to secure the SIMM on the board someplace of which there was none.
What we also did was to take two strips single pin headers (3-pins each) and
soldered them at each end of the SIMM and then soldered them into the board to
give additional mechanical strength as the lead trimmings didn't give much.

But the real point that I was trying to make was that when the problem was
initially discovered, there was ALMOST a decision made to put the brakes on
everything and uneccesarily go and spend money to get new fabs...you'd be
suprized how many people might have made that very decision.

When I asked the program manager to call and ask our customer if it was okay
to solder the SIMM in the board, he looked at me and had this look of suprize
and told me he would've never thought of that, many people see SIMM's as only
being used in a socket...
