Jim, A "bond primer" is often used on phosphoric anodized aluminum surfaces prior to bonding, especially when the application is considered primary aircraft structure. Depending on the cure temp of your epoxy resin (ie 250F or 350F), Cytec has several bond primers that you could use. I have found, however, large minimum buy requirements and long lead times. Also, most of these bond primers must be applied within 24 hours of anodizing ... not always easy to accomplish if you are using job shops for the process. Cytec is @ 714-630-9400.

Feel free to contact me off line if you'd like more information.

Subject: [TN] PHOSPHORIC ACID ANODIZE

We are considering phosphoric acid anodize treatment of a cast aluminum (A356 alloy) for a bonding process (polyimide PWBs to the aluminum core). Would there be any benefit to having the aluminum primed after anodizing, or would the "as-anodized" surface be better for bonding? How about shelf life?
Thanks in advance,
Jim Marsico
