The real key to running a noclean process is finding your optimum process
window. No matter which type of noclean you use, it all falls back on the
process setup. we use a vocfree, which is water based. They key to using a
water based is to dry out the solvent, which is water in the vocfree case.
Alcohol carriers evaporate with much less energy and do not require the 1:1
ratio given with forced air convection preheaters. We use a "chip wave
survivor" series vocfree noclean. You have to understand exactly what's
happening at each stage of your process to truly get an understanding of how to
correctly fix your problem. The soldering process is so trivial, it's easy to
adjust something nonvalue added. A DOE is the best approach to the elimination
of your problem with a knowledge of the fundamentals. "Tweeking" can either
cure ya or kill ya. Good for your daily firefighting to get production off your
back, but terrible for your long-term strategic optimization. Contact me if you
want some good suggestions on how to streamline your process and establish a
defect acceptance level. By the way, we have 5 soldering machines all running
vocfree nocleans.
