Powering Digital Boards - Distribution and Performance

The Greater Boston Chapter of the IPC Designer's Council will
hold its next meeting on Tuesday, Feb 9th at 6pm.

Istvan Novak, SI Staff Engineer with Sun Microsystems, will
speak on the relevant issues of today's digital systems with
respect to the often overlooked (or "assumed") power systems.

As system speeds continue to increase, the multiplicity of
voltages and the integrity of the overall power system can
quickly become major obstacles to physical design and system
        performance. This presentation will examine:

        - Proliferation of supply voltages. Why it happens, do we see
          an end to it?
        - Power-distribution requirements: Historical perspective,
roadmap. Do we have any roadblocks in front of us?
        - Power-distribution components: what should we know about caps,
inductors, planes. Why are caps with higher ESR sometimes
better? How do planes help us?
        - Things to avoid, and how to avoid:
          Resonances among bypass capacitors
          Resonances of power planes
Peaking in PLL and EMI filters
        - A simple approach for bypassing

        Agenda:

Note there is a meeting fee of $5/members; $10/non-members

6:00 pm, Arrivals; Pizza and soft drinks available
6:45 Jeff Seeger - Chapter Update
7:00 Istvan Novak, Power Distribution and Performance

        Directions:

Lockheed/Martin in Lexington MA. This facility is located off
route 128 at the route 2A/Concord/Hanscom exit. Proceed West
200 yds, turn Left onto Forbes Road. The meeting is in the
first building on the left (after the guard shack).

        President's Note:

I am most pleased to have been able to attract Mr. Novak to
present to our group. He is responsible for campaigning signal
and power integrity issues within Sun Microsystems, as both a
point and educational resource. With the performance levels
that a leading computer builder must reach, we can know that
Mr. Novak's perspective and content will highlight a proper
path. I've personally enjoyed (and learned from) his posts
in industry forums, and very much look forward to his presen-
tation. I hope you'll join us.

        Mission:

Design is not called "do" for a reason. To design in today's
PWB environment implies adding value while giving electronics
a physically manifestable form. In order to add value one
must have a full grasp of the issues and stakeholders, often
helping to mediate compromises among those interest groups.
The Greater Boston Chapter of the IPC Designer's Council is
trying to bring those stakeholders, from every discipline,
to show you their problems and solutions so you can add to
        your arsenal of knowledge.

Your help and participation would be most welcome.

Non members are welcome at meetings, but expect some pressure
        to join...<grin>. Non-members RSVP please, reply/sender-only
