Brian,

First define Vision Inspection. There are two operational methods to AOI, POST and PRE Reflow. My take on
both. If you were to look at a typical Pareto Analysis of your facility you will notice that most of the
defects are shorts and opens (to all degrees) and the least amount being missing components, mis-aligned,
skewed, etc,. Theoretically 90% of your defects are after Reflow and 10% are prior to Reflow per the
Pareto Analysis.

So, you have to question how much monies are spent on H/W to identify 10% or 90% of those defects. I have
to agree with most of the responders, that you must have a dedicated technician at all times. If its cost
prohibitive, you should use both Post and Pre Reflow Systems. What PCB shop have you ever walked in and
not seen an Orbotech?

My two cents,

John Gulley
Process QE Manager

I recommend Orbotech and Omron for Post AOI inspection. I highly recommend Orbotech on there AOI system.
You have to remember that Orbotech/Orbot have been in the PCB industry using AOI for at least 15 years, so
they have a leap on other companies.
