To be sure it is clean under the BGA, do some ion chromatography testing
(remove the BGA manually, and examine the area under the bga). IMHO, it is
the only way to be sure you can clean sufficiently.
If you don't have in-house capability, there are many labs that can do this
sort of test for you, and recommend improvements to your process where
required. Two labs I've used are:

Contamination Studies Laboratory (CSL in Kokomo, Indiana, (765) 457-9033)

Celestica's lab in Toronto, Canada - see their web site www.celestica.com,
section on failure analysis.

Once you are sure your process is a good one the use of an Ionograph or
similar device is a good way to be confident you are continuing to do a good
job.

Good luck!

Subject: [TN] BGA clean checking

As you all know. We are getting into doing a basic BGA assembly. The new
question which came up is, since we run a water soluble flux paste. How are
we going to know if it is clean under the BGA?? Any suggestions beside
going to a no clean paste??

Thanks in advance.

John
