UK or Imperial gallon is indeed around 20% bigger than a US gallon at 4.55
Litres compared to 3.78, but the weight of a gallon is dependant on the
density or SG of the liquid. So a UK gallon of water does weigh 10 lbs, but a
UK gallon of say IPA with an SG of 0.8 will weigh 8lbs and so on.
I have no idea why the US got a smaller gallon, everything is supposed to be
bigger in the USA.
ps: Don't US suppliers still give the weight in lbs per (US) gallon for their
products on their data sheets?
