Hi Ed

Go through catalogs ( Molex ; AMP ; etc.) the drawings are fairly self
descriptive .
I just fished out few 5A rated compact con's (SMD's) to kill off the
last non reflowed components on our boards .
These particular Molex ones have flat film piece ( looks like a thick
Kapton tape ) non permanently glued on top to pick them from tape and
than you center as normal IC ;
the more troublesome you'd need a clip tool for your P&P and perhaps
design a tray if it's to loose from tape ; or customize vibro magazine .
The tolerances for paste in hole you can afford fairly wide ; as per
previous stencils discussions > open the slots to give you enough paste
.
The better connectors have SM legs and TH anchors ; with the plastic
lugs ( like standard phone plugs ) you'll need something like one of
Yamaha' robots with vibro bowls ;
to force it in ; they're almost cheap . But before you'll go to extra
gear ; try to redesign ; the variety nowadays permits good solution .
If you can not ; than drill bigger holes and rely on terminals to
support the component ( low usage ) .
Other thing is press melt (Teflon tip) the lug in hole afterwards ; if
time and application will allow you .
The lug should not miss the holes ; with tooling holes or fiducials on
board and proper head on place gear .
I thing the clip plastic lugs will be disappearing as time goes, for
exactly this difficulties on autoplace ; it's too reliant on hand
dexterity and force .
And yes ; the con. Co.s are slowly getting there ; use tech support
folks .
Let me know if you have specific specs ; it's possible I've been through
it .
Or check with Bev ( he may be hibernating , pretending it's Christmas
time ) or one of his pals ( check archives for Nortel mechanics ); the
high volume guys do usually have this things sorted out ; minority is
even allowed (or bothers) to go public . Last time I needed something
from Philips it took me weeks to get clearance and even than I was lucky
to be in unrelated field ; sad , but understandable . Nortel guys are
definitely one of better ones .
I left coms some years ago .

See you
