Charlie,
Give me a call, we've just finishing up a 60 day evaluation of a
new system from IRSI, and are just getting ready to uncrate a MVP system
for our next on-site evaluation. Once we get it up and running, you can
stop over for a lookie-see and get some feedback from our IRSI
experience. We may also be looking at Omron's system if they can give us
a machine in-house for 30 days or so. I've got to agree with a lot of
what Phil Z is saying, AOI systems do some good things, but they still
leave a lot to be desired. Particularly in the area of joint inspection,
they still can't hold a candle to an HP 5DX X-Ray (all I want for
Christmas is....). We are primarily looking for a system that can
provide:

- Component absence/presence
- Component polarity
- Component alignment
- Component value recognition

This will allow us to inspect for components that we can't check in ICT
due to access/node issues and speed up our job setup/first article
process. Everybody promises the moon, that's why we are only considering
vendors that will drop iron on our floor. It's too easy to put on a good
'dog and pony' when they have a chance to work on the product at their
place before you get to see it.
