Hi all,
I am wondering if anyone can help me out! I am trying to find any
reference to a specification which states when a component is of a
certain mass, it needs to be fastened to the PCB by other means than its
solder joints (i.e. adhesive or mechanical fastening). I know the old
MIL-STD-2000A specification did state that if a component is 0.25 ounce
(7.1 grams) or more per lead than it must be supported by approved means
to ensure joints are not relied upon for mechanical support. I am being
told that a similar clause exists in either the IPC (ANSI/J-STD-001B or
ANSI/IPC-A-610) standards or BellCore GR-78-CORE. I have search these
and cannot seem to find any reference to this. Am I missing something,
or does such a clause exist somewhere else? The specific case I have is
a DC-DC power converter which weighs 3 oz. (85 grams) and has 9 thru
hole leads (0.040" dia.). We currently work to Bellcore and IPC
specifications. Is there a requirement to fasten this power converter
to the PCB with screws? Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
dc
