Just a silly thought.  I think it would be a lot less confusing (and more
intuitive to me) if the LED _anode_ was always called pin 1 and we always
put the square pad (or markings) for orientation at the anode end, not the
cathode.  This would be consistent with other conventions, such as marking
pin 1 on DIPs or the anode on electrolytic capacitors with a square pad or
marking.  But the semi folks decided to band the cathode end on diodes so I
guess we're stuck with occasional confusion and using it for orientation.
