What information do you wnat to extract from the database?
Most of the information you require for a BOM can be included in the Viewdraw symbol attributes. If you have a substantial library of symbols without these attributes, updating it could be a pretty daunting and time consuming task, but worth it in the long run. Obviously including live data such as unit cost is not realy feasable, but as you are using Viewdraw, DX Databook may be worth a look.

Hi all,

I need a bit of advice on ASCII manipulation of design information.
It's more of an open question really.

"What is your opinion of using scripts to post process netlists and
partslists ?"
"Where would be a good place to start learning how to do this ?"

Many of the design engineers here are voicing objections to manually
inputting extra data into their schematic diagrams, manufacturers names,
order numbers, second sources, etc. They want the process simplified by
using (PERL?)scripts to add this information into the Partslist from a
central database. Up to now I considered the Schematic to be the "GOLD"
document containing all the information required, so I am nervous about
taking this route. What is the probability of introducing new errors to
the design using this method ?

The proposed method is to take a Viewdraw Partslist file, run a PERL
script that will extract information from an access database, and
create a finished BOM that can be sent to our assembler. Of course I am
expected to write this script, an area I have little experience in :-)

Any advice ,comments, etc. welcome as always.

Regards;

Derek
