<< Hi Folks,

We've got an engineer who wants to stack 1206 resistors 3 high in order to
achieve a larger power rating. While it is intuitively obvious to us that
this is NOT the way to go, we are at a loss to find any published documents
that caution or forbid the practice.

Can anyone cite a published source that can give more specific "rules or
 guidelines" on this subject.

 We've searched, J-STD-001, SM-780, SM-782, A-610, and R-700

 Help!!!!!

Hi Sherman!

This isn't for production is it? Because I don't know if that would be a
wise thing to do for production product. Now if it's a prototype, anything
goes! I've had to do some pretty weird things for proto's...some of those
weird things I remember were having to stack resistors AND capacitors on top
of one another, stacking gull-wing static ram on top of one another and
soldering the leads of one, to the leads of the part below it (we called those
"condominiums"), "dead-bugging" PAL's on-top of processors and wiring-up every
lead on the PAL.

I don't think you'll find anything published that deviates too far from
what's normal or standard. I'm gonna probably answer my own question here, but
why are you wanting to do that anyway? Is it a proto, or is it because you
can't buy what you want for the board?

Anyways, as long as it survives getting mounted like that, I don't see any
reason why it would be a problem...'course I'm no electrical engineer, but
I've done stuff like that before.
