Hi Linda - It is possible to solder to a nickel finish that does not have a
sacrificial cover finish such a immersion gold. Nickel oxide is pretty
tough stuff so the fluxes used to solder to nickel finishes typically
contain some very active ingredients that can create corrosion issues if
not properly removed after soldering. Take a look in Klein Wassink's
"Soldering in Electronics" chapter 6, ISBN # 0-901150-14-2 for more info.
You should also take a look at how much tin-nickel intermetallic your
soldering process produces - too much intermetallic formation can result in
poor solder joint reliability depending on your use environment (section
4.2.5.5, page 99). Good Luck.

Subject: [TN] Soldering to Nickel

Technetters,
We recently received a quote for a printed circuit assembly which the board
is
plated with nickel. I have made the remark that you cannot solder to
nickel
and have been told that others do it.

So Technetters, have any of you soldered an assembly which has through hole
components, to a board that is nickel plated?

Waiting on a reply to this one.

Linda
