<< Steve,
Are we talking about rework for PTH or SMT or both?
Hi Bev! Both...just anything that needs touch-up.
Is this no-clean, OA or RMA type chemistry?
I'm water soluble..OA..
Are you talking about cored wire, solder paste, liquid
flux, paste flux or all of the above?
Mostly liquid flux and cored solder..

What is(are) the solvent(s) your operators use?
They have a little "dab" bottle of Alcohol at their stations that sometimes I
see them take Q-tips and clean with. Other times I see them walk over to the
ultrasonic cleaner, dip Q-tips into, and brush at the area they just touched
up, then they grab the air hose that's supposed to be used to blow the
stencils off with to dry the water from the board...

If it is no-clean, do they really need to clean at all after the rework? Is
their hand cleaning that bad or is it a result of the flux, solvent or
combination you are using?

We don't use no-clean, but Bev, it's my understanding that you should clean
the entire board when doing touch up if you use a no-clean liquid touch up
flux. Because unlike no-clean cored wire solder, there's a chance that you may
not exhaust or volatilize (sp?) the active components the same way that a
reflow oven or wave solder does...there may be some of the liquid flux that
was applied that might not see the heat of the soldering iron...am I wrong
about this? Am I really anal retentive?
