At the April meeting of the IPC TG responsible for IPC-SM-817 "General Requirements
for Dielectric Surface Mounting Adhesives" there was general discussion as to
applicability of the document. Currently J-STD-001B makes reference to it as "meets
SM-817". Two of the major US suppliers at the meeting (Loctite and Ciba) indicated
that they are generally not asked to provide certification of their products to
SM-817. The task group decided to send an informal survey to industry with the
questions below.

Based on the feedback the following potential actions are anticipated:
-SM-817 will be retired
-SM-817 will be changed to guideline document
-SM-817 will be updated as little as possible and reissued

==========
Question for SUPPLIERS of adhesive material used in surface mount assembly processes:
 Do you certify your product(s) to IPC-SM-817 or would you if requested by your
customer?
 [  ]  Do not certify to IPC-SM-817
 [ ] Certify or use document, leave unchanged
 [ ] Certify or use document and would like to revise/add the following test
methods (provide suggestions):

==========
Question for USERS of adhesive material used in surface mount assembly processes:
Do/Are you:

 [ ] Use IPC-SM-817 and Assume that vendor certifies
 [ ] Use IPC-SM-817 and ask for certification
 [ ] Aware of IPC-SM-817 but don't use. (Please share your reason: )
 [ ] Don't use and do not plan on using
 [ ] Don't use as a standard, it would be more value to me if the document was
changed to "guideline".

I join task group chair Larry Crane, Loctite, in thanking you for taking just a few
