     Klaus,
There are a few good options here:
Option 1: IMHO, the best option, assuming cost is acceptable, is to
purchase the connectors in a surface mount version on tape and reel.
Some connector vendors have been a little high in the price they
charge for putting their connectors in tape and reel, so I have gone
to a 3rd party tape house, such as GPAX (ph:614-851-0500) for the
taping, and also, sometimes the placement equipment vendors do not
always have the best feeder solutions for some of the larger/unique
connectors, so again I have been going with 3rd party sources, like
     GPAX or Hover-Davis (ph:716-352-9590).

Option 2: If you want/need to stick with a TH leaded connector,
(assuming the one you choose can withstand reflow temps, of course),
You have a couple of good options.
-Use the pin-in-paste method by printing extra paste around & in
the TH's, (gees'-louise, we've had some good discussions on this
interesting topic, search the archives for info on this) and you need
to develop a good placement/feeder method.
-OR...use a connectors that come complete with SBL (Solder Bearing
Leads) where the connector already has solder "held" around each lead,
or preforms that you can place on the leads, which will reflow around
the lead. Good sources for these are Alpha Solder Preforms
(ph:401-232-2772) or TEKA Interconnect Systems (ph:401-785-4110). And
you will still need to develop a good placement/feeder method.

Option 3: (course, these do not meet the criteria of being done as
part of surface mount, but they fit certain scenarios)
Another viable option of course is selective soldering, which there
are various systems like Panasonic's soft-beam system
     (ph:847-288-4438), or ERSA's VersaFlow programmable point-wave
(ph:414-375-6844), and I know SEHO, Premier Tool/Wenesco and Airvac
(sorry no ph #'s readily avail.) also have solutions.
Hope this helps you get started, a lot of us have been (and are still working)
down this road. Good Luck

Fellow Technetters,

with a lot of effort we turned 98 % of our designs to SMT. Only a few
components, mostly connectors are left.
Who can recommend companies who have:
- a very good selection of SMT connectors,
- experience in turning THT stuff into SMT or
- have gone the extra mile to make THT components work in Reflow.

Thanks in advance
