TechNet:
Some populated boards with component holes running through the groundplane were subjected to lifetime cycling and showed failure due to arcing between the component through hole and ground plane.
Is there a minimum recommended clearance necessary from the barrel to the plane to prevent arcing or shorting? The work is being done for an automobile application but just as easily could be related to a maritime situation.
Any help would be greatly appreciated in the form of input, references, former ITRI/NIMI studies, or IPC specifications so as not to reinvent the wheel. Thank you in advance.
