Joe,

I'd agree with many of the things Bev suggests.

You may get some mileage from using a paint which dries to a harder finish. The
paint manufacturers should be able to help you on this. If you have some money
to spend, powder coating systems can give very durable finishes with no real
drying time.

It's possible to put the paint you're spraying (I assume you're spraying) into
aerosals. We used to do this and keep some in our packing department to do last
minute touch ups.

Looking at handling can reduce scrap. Can you change the process flow so the
minimum number of handling stages are employed? Making sure all the work
surfaces are either foam padded or plastic covered will also help.
