You can make your footprints anyway you want. (X or Y direction)

Its been pretty much a carry-over from tht footprints.

Pin 1 goes in the lower left corner.

Just remember that when building SMT footprints, to put the origin (0,0)
in the center.

This avoids tolerance build-up (espically on large flatpacks and micro-pitch
devices)
