All right, wise guy! :-)

I didn't suggest that there was anything wrong with quotation, per se, but
that it would be more courteous to keep what is quoted down to what is
relevant to one's response.

As to the comment from another writer that having the entire conversation,
back and forth in one piece made it easier to archive, this is an
interesting argument, particularly when there is a question and answer, or
a concise discussion. But it does not justify the repetition of the list
information at the end, fancy signatures, etc. The only reason I can see
for that is an aversion to taking the time to delete it.

Further, all messages in this mailing list are archived, for public access;
as a matter of fact, that archive is how I discovered this list and first
used it. A result of massive and redundant quotation is that real answers
get buried in a blizzard of offhand comments, secondary questions, etc.,
etc, and I remember that my search probably took twice as long as would
have been otherwise necessary because of those things. There were a lot of
posts which did not answer a question, but did quote it, and which also
quoted, sometimes, partial answers which I had already read, etc., etc, and
all these other posts turned up in my search.

If one's answer cannot be understood without the quotation, to quote is
better. But if the response stands alone, and the quoted material does not
enhance it, to edit out unnecessary quoted matter is best.

JoAnn, your little essay on the basic principles of printed circuit design
has been immortalized for future generations.... :-)

All right, I promise not to mention it again!
